Numb or Just Dumb?

The Numbness of the Age

You’d think that seeing part of the White House torn open — walls ripped away, floors exposed to the cold air — would wake people up.
But it hasn’t.
The nation just scrolls past the wreckage, eyes glazed, fingers flicking from one catastrophe to the next.

Somewhere between the scandals, the wars, the indictments, and the celebrity “dramas,” the human nervous system quietly gave up. It reached capacity. The shockwaves kept coming, faster than anyone could process, and now everything just blends into a single tone — a low-level hum of crisis that never stops long enough for anyone to feel it.

What used to be extraordinary has become the new ordinary.
And when the bizarre becomes background noise, civilization starts to drift into a kind of waking sleep — lights on, nobody home.

Outrage has a half-life now. Maybe six hours, maybe less.
People click “like” on disaster, share it with a caption about “how awful,” and then it’s gone — replaced by an ad for sneakers, a cooking video, or the next minor apocalypse.
The emotional system has been trained for constant triage: don’t look too long, don’t feel too deep, move on before it burns.

But here’s the strange part — it’s not indifference. It’s overload.
People care, they really do. They’re just out of voltage. You can’t keep the current of outrage running forever without a break in the circuit.
So they numb out. They turn the volume down, just to stay functional.

And that’s when things slip by — not because no one noticed, but because no one had the bandwidth left to react.

Maybe it’ll take something personal to cut through the fog again — the rent not paid, the child asking why the sky’s full of drones, the creeping sense that the world has become a simulation with no exit.
Then, just maybe, people will stop scrolling and start looking again.

That’s how the fog lifts: one person, one moment of awareness at a time.
And when enough of those moments pile up, something moves.
A tremor in the collective.
A reminder that the numbness isn’t permanent — it’s just the body’s way of protecting the soul until it’s ready to wake up.

Because one day soon, someone will look at that missing wing of the White House, that gaping wound in the symbol of power, and whisper the oldest question in history:

“What happened while we weren’t looking?”

SONG: “Nobody’s Looking”

[Verse 1]
The White House is missing a wing tonight,
And nobody seems to care.
They scroll past ghosts and hollow lights,
Pretending that nothing is there.

We used to raise our voices loud,
Now we just shake our heads.
The news goes by like thunderclouds,
And silence spreads instead.

[Chorus]
While we weren’t looking, the lights went dim,
While we weren’t listening, the truth grew thin.
We traded our hearts for another spin—
Oh Lord, what happened
While we weren’t lookin’?

[Verse 2]
There’s a hum behind the city walls,
A kind of static prayer.
The people dream with open eyes,
But no one’s really there.

The outrage burned, then flickered out,
Too tired to stay aflame.
Each shock just dulls the senses more,
Till we forget who’s to blame.

[Chorus]
While we weren’t looking, the lights went dim,
While we weren’t listening, the truth grew thin.
We scrolled through the fire, called it just another sin—
Oh Lord, what happened
While we weren’t lookin’?

[Bridge]
It’s not that we don’t care—
It’s that we’ve run out of tears.
Too many storms, too many years,
Too much fear in our mirrors.

But someday the numb will crack,
And one voice will be enough.
To wake the sleepers, shake them back—
Remind the world to love.

[Final Chorus / Outro]
While we weren’t looking, the stars grew cold,
While we weren’t dreaming, the story got sold.
Now there’s a hole in the heart of the fold—
Oh Lord, we’re waking
While we’re still lookin’.
