act1 scene 1

Stepping Into the Magic Theater

Tonight we completed what is, in many ways, the front door to the Norton Street adventure.

The scene opens in the mysterious Magic Theater, where the Bornless One discovers that the giant screen is not showing a movie at all—it is replaying the events of his own most recent lifetime. As the “opening credits” begin to roll, an unsettling realization sets in. Something is changing. Something is about to happen, and all he wants is to get home before the waking state reaches its peak.

What follows is both comedy and metaphysics. Mike calmly explains the impossible while the Bornless One reacts the way most of us probably would—with confusion, anxiety, and just enough humor to keep from falling apart completely. Their conversation gradually reveals that Norton Street is not simply a location, but a carefully constructed reality created by the Bornless One himself. Even so, he isn’t entirely convinced he knows his own way home.

As they make their journey, familiar ideas from the Norton Street universe begin to emerge: non-player characters, holographic reality, self-created worlds, and the curious possibility that the universe is nothing more than an exquisitely rendered illusion experienced from inside a very small bubble of awareness.

One of the pleasures of writing this series is allowing profound philosophical ideas to arrive disguised as ordinary conversation. Mike never lectures. Bornless never stops questioning. Between them, they manage to explore consciousness, identity, and the nature of reality while sounding like two old friends driving home after an evening at the movies.

The KGOD radio format continues to provide the perfect frame for these scenes. Rather than interrupting the story with elaborate broadcasts, this episode uses only a simple station opening and closing, allowing the Magic Theater itself to become the star of the performance. Sometimes the best production choice is simply to get out of the way and let the characters speak.

With this scene complete, the audience has officially crossed the threshold. The curtain has risen, the credits have rolled, and the journey back to Norton Street has begun.
