Big Brass Band

NORTON STREET BRASS BAND

Stand back. They’re coming through.

Norton Street Brass Band takes the songs of Norton Street out of the theater, out of the studio, and straight into the street—where the horns are loud, the drums are moving, and absolutely nobody has a permit.

Trumpets shout. Trombones answer. The tuba handles crowd control. The drummer appears to know where everybody is going, although nobody else does.

And through the middle of it all come the familiar characters, situations and strange observations of Norton Street, transformed into the kind of music that makes standing still seem slightly ridiculous.

This isn’t polite concert-hall brass.

It’s parade brass. Street-corner brass. Funeral-turning-into-a-party brass.

That’s what makes this version particularly interesting. Norton Street has already survived remarkably well in a variety of musical worlds, but the brass-band treatment reveals something that was there all along: the material likes to move.

Ideas that sounded philosophical in one version suddenly sound mischievous. Lines that seemed mysterious become celebrations. Even the darker moments acquire that peculiar brass-band quality of saying:

Yes, we’re all doomed. Keep marching.

So turn it up.

Open the windows.

Alarm the neighbors.

And if a parade unexpectedly forms outside your house, don’t blame us.

NORTON STREET BRASS BAND

PLAY LOUD. LIVE HARD. KEEP MOVING.
