Life in a Box Chapter 11

a country at war with another is a country at peace with itself.

It’s time to get practical. You’re in a box and you can’t get out of the box, at least not for very long.

Just long enough to go shopping or go to the bank to visit what’s left of your money.

There you are in a box. Everybody’s in a box. We’re all in our boxes. We’re totally boxed in. That’s a Given.

Now, under those circumstances, where you can’t have ANY contact with anyone else — I’m in that “78 years old” category myself, and can’t contact anyone for any reason — what can you DO in that box to make a living?

Who will give you money to do that? How much, how often? Any repeat sales? Continue reading

Hashmarketing

Atlantis Magazine Cover Spread for your fabulous “hashmarketing” plan.

What is “HASHMARKETING”?

It’s really very simple — it’s about finding a RELEVANT subject or thread on any social media platform, and hooking your wagon to the highest star, meaning the most obvious and loudest posting.

What you do is, you attach a commentary to it, along with a link to a purchase point. This used to be called “hijacking”, but is now considered a “deepening of the subject”.

The idea here is to stay on subject, appear relevant and to their point, and yet to strap your marketing buzzfeed onto a popular place, meaning that you take deliberate advantage of their traffic.

Hey, in this climate, you gotta do whatever it takes. Make sure you remember that as you go — it’ll keep you working when it gets real bad.

Badness comes in cycles, like everything else. You gotta learn to ride the swells and rest on the falls. Put the coin in the slot and ride the bumpy horsie. Continue reading

If you want more out of it, you have to do something to make it happen.

Go ahead and insert the Godd™ Particle flash drive into the USB port of your laptop or Pc and invoke the “Bardotown” starter Orb. Continue reading

NYT: “Godd™ Particle Success Story”

you can order this full-color tearsheet from Marvette — call for details.

This is a success story we need to get in place, quickly, before it’s really too late. We will need to work hard to get Godd™ Particles out there, while we still can.

There are dozens of reasons why we will be stopped from production and shipping, such as truck strikes, Chinese export stoppage, rate hikes and religious clampdown on non-Christian and “subversive” publications and artifacts.

It is an age of intolerance. Better batten down the hatches, and the only way YOU can do that at this late date, with NO resources and NO hope of escape from the trap of daily grind, is to WEAR, SELL, and PROMOTE Godd™ Particles hand-over-fist, meaning “sell a LOT of them FAST!”

How many? How fast?

Bound For Glory

“Me & My Money”, a serigraph produced decades ago.

My serigraphs used to retail at $1800-$3000, but we haven’t marketed them for at least 20 years — what are today’s prices? No idea, but we’re going to find out.

I intend to dig out some of those serigraphs, produced in the days before computer generated “giclee” color printing. These are from pastel originals. They are each and every one completely hand-printed, each color laid down separately, through a carefully prepared silkscreen, until all colors are present on the print.

Technically, it is “a work on paper”, and is produced in a profoundly limited run, hence it is sometimes referred to as “a multiple original” or “an original multiple”, depending on what part of the country your gallery might be standing.

I’m offering them today at ridiculously low prices, because my market has yet to be re-established in the marketplace.

Hence and therefore, the serigraph “Me & My Money” is available FRAMED to retail at $850, which means that your wholesale cost will be $350, allowing you to “keystone double”, which is standard retail practice.

Keep in mind that this piece comes framed, and that means money. If you don’t want it framed, take off $50 and we’ll ship you the serigraph flat — I don’t roll prints if I can help it — of course, large paintings on canvas are quite another matter.

There are not many of any of my earlier serigraphs left — they sold surprisingly well at the time — so if you want one of these compelling and dramatic pieces, better say so right now. Please don’t contact me months from now and expect to get one of these serigraphs. Continue reading

Handling The Between-Customers-State

Practicing guitar is always an option. Play softly.

If you’re operating a shop, storefront, booth, kiosk or busking station, you’ll want to know what to do with those interminable waiting periods between customers, and there will be plenty of them, believe it.

Many retailers and service personnel lose a LOT of precious productivity, and when you own your own business and want to be your own boss — well, you’ll have a LOT of time on your hands.

If you’re ever in a department store where customers are not actually engaged in sales, you’ll see the salespeople adjusting things, dusting things, re-arranging things, pricing things — basically, doing something, anything, to appear busy.

It’s widely believed, and perhaps it’s true, that if customers see salespeople loafing about, they won’t buy a thing, which certainly matches my extensive experience in retail.

Heck-darn, when you’re talking Retail, you’re talking Planet Earth. Why, back home, we NEVER pay retail — nobody pays retail anywhere except here on Planet Earth.

Humans of Planet Earth are so ignorant, they call it “bartering”, not “bargaining”, when you make offers and counter-offers.

Bartering is where you trade a laying hen for a carpenter’s work fixing your wagon, and I don’t mean that figuratively at all. Continue reading

Coinology Sales Tools

You can sell Error Coins, too — this Pooping Horse is worth megabucks!!!

“These are the exact same U.S. quarters that you have now in your pocket or purse.” — at least, that’s what you tell them when they come through the gallery or studio door.

Clear your throat, and continue:

“The only difference between your pocket change and my coins is the quality of the coin. Mine have no scratches, no dents, no dings, no stains and no wear and tear.

“You’re looking at the result of hundreds of hours, which is the time I spend finding the good coins, the ones that aren’t worn down or scratched or dented or stained or otherwise made useless for jewelry.

“You can have any grade of coin for spending money, but with jewelry, it has to be perfect, absolutely flawless, like a diamond.

You wait for a moment to get the effect, then continue:

“If you’ll take out your change for a moment and put it on this velvet pad,” (indicating the velvet search pad on the nearby table or countertop) “I’ll show you the difference.”

Do so.

If they exclaim, “Wow!!!” when they see your Perfect Coins, it means that they’re impressed by this display and they’ll probably be willing to buy the jewelry.

You’ve made a sale, but you’ll have to start somewhere, and it might as well be with showing them through your collection of 100 of my Pegboard Perfect coins, meaning that those are what you should be putting out there when YOU’RE doing the search, at that level and grade, and not a whit below that grade.

When you know how, you can search your own. Continue reading

Give me a fulcrum and a place to stand and I will move the Earth

Bike Wheels & Crutches, sculpture by ej gold Otis Gallery, 1967.

It was Archimedes who said, “Give me a fulcrum and a place to stand, and I will move the Earth”, but everybody focused on the fulcrum instead of the place to stand, which was a big mistake that hasn’t been corrected since the Empire fell — you know which one I mean.

All of them. They all fall down & go boom after a while, just as every dominant species gives way to a new adaptation sooner or later, and in the case of organic life, it’s generally sooner rather than later.

A fulcrum is something steady, something that doesn’t move, and that allows a lever to be applied in order to reduce the amount of torque you need to apply in order to move the targeted heavy thing, such as a giant rock or a planet.

A lever allows you to place the fulcrum so that the amount of force needed is no more than you’d want to put in, taking into account how long it might take to move the thing, meaning that there must be a balance achieved between the fulcrum and the lever handle.

Gosh, it sounds so complicated, but one simple hands-on demo would show you what I mean. The closer the fulcrum point is to the object, the easier it will be to move it with the lever, while the farther away it is, the wider the movement of the object for the given force … oh, heck, I’ll do a demo in the upcoming workshop to show you how it works — most folks never inquire or discover anything about fulcrums and levers, so you might find it interesting and educational.

Keep in mind, however, that the lever and fulcrum are the least important in the scheme of things — it’s “a place to stand” that really makes the difference, and that goes double for sales and marketing, and that goes triple for promotions that introduce work ideas to the public. Continue reading
